Broken, chipped, or cracked tooth
A broken tooth can happen from biting on something hard, a sports injury, or even grinding your teeth at night. Depending on the severity, treatment can range from smoothing a minor chip, to bonding, a crown, or in some cases extraction. Bring any tooth fragments with you if possible.
Knocked-out tooth (avulsed tooth)
A knocked-out permanent tooth is one of the most time-sensitive dental emergencies. If you can get to us within 30–60 minutes, there's a good chance we can save the tooth. Handle the tooth by the crown (the white part), not the root. If possible, gently place it back in the socket. If you can't, keep it moist in milk or saline and come to us immediately.
A filling or crown can come loose due to normal wear, decay underneath, or biting on something hard. While not always painful, a lost restoration exposes the tooth to further damage and sensitivity. Keep the filling or crown if you can find it, and avoid chewing on that side until we can see you.
Lost filling or crown
Swelling in the gums or face can indicate an abscess (a pocket of infection). This needs prompt treatment — an untreated abscess can spread and become a serious health risk. If swelling is accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing, go to the hospital emergency department or call 000 immediately.
Gum or facial swelling
Falls, sports injuries, and accidents can cause damage to teeth, gums, and the jaw. Even if a tooth looks intact after a knock, it may have sustained internal damage that needs assessment. We recommend coming in for an examination as soon as possible after any blow to the mouth or face.

Post-treatment pain that's getting worse
Some discomfort after dental treatment is normal, but pain that intensifies after a few days rather than improving could indicate a complication such as a dry socket (after extraction) or an infection. Contact us so we can assess and address the issue.
First aid for dental emergencies
While you're waiting to see us, here's what you can do to manage your situation:
Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water (half a teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water). Avoid very hot or cold foods and drinks. Over-the-counter pain relief such as ibuprofen or paracetamol can help manage the pain — follow the instructions on the packaging. Avoid placing aspirin directly on the gum, as this can burn the tissue.
Toothache
Rinse your mouth with warm water. If there's bleeding, apply gentle pressure with a clean gauze or cloth. Keep any broken fragments — place them in a small container with milk or saliva. Avoid biting on the affected side. If the break has left a sharp edge, you can cover it with sugar-free chewing gum or dental wax to protect your tongue and cheek.
Broken or chipped tooth
Pick up the tooth by the crown only — do not touch the root. If it's dirty, rinse it very gently with milk (not water). Try to place it back in the socket and hold it there by biting gently on a clean cloth. If you can't reinsert it, keep it moist in milk or saline. Time is critical — come to us within 30 minutes if possible.
Knocked-out tooth
If you still have the crown, you can try placing it back temporarily using a small amount of denture adhesive or toothpaste (not superglue). Avoid chewing on that side. If the tooth is sensitive, clove oil from the pharmacy can help temporarily numb the area.
Lost filling or crown
Apply a cold compress to the outside of your cheek (10 minutes on, 10 minutes off). If swelling is accompanied by fever, difficulty swallowing, or difficulty breathing, do not wait for a dental appointment — call 000 or go to the nearest hospital emergency department.

Diagnosis
Our first priority is to get you out of pain. Depending on your situation, this may involve applying a temporary dressing, smoothing a sharp edge, draining an abscess, starting a root canal, or providing a prescription for antibiotics or pain management.
Immediate relief
Once the immediate issue is managed, we'll explain your treatment options clearly, including the costs involved. We'll never proceed with treatment without your understanding and consent.
